The T20 format requires highly skilled pool of team members. A team need to chop and change players at will based on the team performance. This is the formula for a team to perform consistently. The batters have adapted to play in any positions. The mindset of fans has changed as the format evolved. The fans definitely have an eye on a star to perform. At the end of the day they celebrate any player who gets their team over the line.
In the IPL 2022 edition, the Mumbai Indians made brave moves of bringing in Brevis and Tilak up the order which worked very well. The MI are having a poor run due to openers, middle order and bowlers not being successful. However they are adopting chop and change model heading in the right direction.
RCB and SRH have a good pool of players for the new ask of T20 format. These two teams have good potential to be crowned as Champions this year.
Lucknow and Gujarat made a good use of mega auctions to secure talented players as they join the new era of T20 with right mindset.
Punjab Kings team always provides opportunities to groom youngsters and they have been successful with it.
RR and DC have a forward thinking and thriving well with the chop and change model for many years now.
The CSK team is not ready for the chop and change model. They operated with a same team for several years and were successful. However with more teams added this year splitting talented players across, retaining same team for all the matches and having less talented players in the pool is back firing in a big way. In public eyes, all young players are learning lot in nets but not getting match experience. Ruturaj was introduced very late after the debacle in 2020 edition. As a fan I couldn’t see this helping to grow the team for the future.
Having nine matches in hand, CSK should try the chop and change model to gauge things for the future. The 2022 edition for them is fading away unless they play a Rafael Nadal type of come back.
The high profile CSK vs MI match has turned into a minnows clash this year as the T20 format has moved on. CSK especially need to rethink about team organisation.
